1.Product Description
The aramid tape is a flat braid made from high quality aramid fiber in such a way that the braid is 'flat', i.e. it is not a tube/sleeve but instead resembles a densely woven tape. The fiber orientation of the tape is +/- 45 degrees which means that the braid is ideally suited to handling torsional loads, affords excellent conformity (drape) without buckling the fibers and resists crack propagation.
Aramid flat braid is used as a very high strength tape for joining composite panels or protecting joins in composite panels, most commonly around the seam of kayaks, canoes and other small boats.
Aramid flat braid is compatible with all conventional resin systems including polyester, vinylester and epoxy resin. Most commonly, the braid is applied to the outside seam of canoes and kayaks so completely overlap the join between the upper and lower hull mouldings. The braid is then simply wet-out with epoxy resin and then once cured, over-painted once more with another coat of epoxy resin to create an extremely tough, durable and protective join.

3.Advantages
- Excellent drapability
- Very wear resistant
- Consistent fiber placement
- Braids improve interlaminar shear properties when combined together with other braids. Interlaminar adhesion in braided structures enables the layers to move together, which helps to prevent cracks.
- As braids are woven on a bias, they provide very efficient reinforcement for parts that are subjected to torsional loads.
- It is possible to form an "L" profile which is curved. This behavior makes it suited to reinforce radial pipe connections.
- For sports the Aramid flat braid is commonly used to bond 2 canoe halves together. Then the ±45° fibers will both work, compared to a fabric, which has one functional direction.
- Braids can be easily and repeatedly expanded to fit over molding tools or cores. They can accommodate straight, uniform cross-section forms as well as non-linear, irregular cross-section components.
- Braids can be designed with high level of flame resistance, abrasion resistance, flexibility and expandability.
4.Typical Uses
Aramid flat braid can be put to excellent use in a wide range of composite and none-composite applications including:
- Joining and protecting the join of canoe/kayak shells
- Reinforcing radial connections
- Reinforcement for pultrusion profiles
- Use in abrasion resistant protective garments
- Fire-toys (wound around spinners/sticks etc. to retain the fuel)
- General composites applications as a very strong reinforcement tape

---------- FAQ ----------
1.How Much Resin Will l Need To Wet Out This Aramid Based Fabric?
For wet-lay lamination you will use a bit more resin than the weight of the fabric. A typical fiber resin ratio for Aramid based fabrics is45/55. For example, with a 300gsm cloth, for 1 square metre you wil have 300g of fabric and thus wilneed 367g of resin to wet it outplus a small amount of wastage for the brush and mixing pot.
2.How Do I Go About Ordering A Sample of This Aramid Fabric?
You can purchase a sample of our fabrics here.
3.Is This Fabric Available In Any Alternative colours?
No. Our Kevlar Fabric is only available in the classic Kevlar yellow.
4.Is This Aramid Available As A Prepreg?
We do not currently stock any hybrid pre-pregs either as carbon-aramid mix or pure aramid
5.How Can I Drill A Hole Into Cured Composites Containing Aramid Or Diolen?
Aramid and Diolen laminates can be drilled into using a Hss dril bit designed for driling steel Start with a pilot hole and work up thediameter untilthe desired hole size is achieved. Any aramid/diolen fluft can be cut off with a sharp stanley blade or scalpel.
